Rocks

In the meadow at dusk, he perched on the ground in front of her holding her right foot in his hands. She was opposite of him on the grass and dirt, hands splayed out behind her supporting her body weight while looking at him concerned. Her white sun dress, dirty and soiled, her skin a thin layer of sweat and smudged dirt. Her nose was marked black from rubbing it on the back of her hand. Her cheeks were streaked with brown color. Her eyes were wide. Looking up from her foot, “My Gods she’s beautiful,” he thought to himself, snickering, catching her eyes with his.

His boots were off, strewn to the side carelessly, his brown cloth trousers, tied with a strap and a poor bow knot, caked with mud. He had removed his shirt to wipe her feet of the black mud so he could inspect them for her. Sweat dripped down his throat and chest. When she cried out in the Dark holding his hand, his instinct of protection washed over him. He had carried her all the way back here to where they met for the first time, where they always meet.

He soothed the sole of her foot with his thumbs before wigging her toes one by one. He asked each time if it hurts and she shook her head no. He then scraped more mud from her heel. “How bad is it?” he heard the worry in her throat. “You’re fine silly, you didn’t cut yourself,” he said laughing. She wrinkled her brow looking at her blonde boy, “It’s sure felt like I did!”

He massaged her sole, leaning down kissing the ball of her foot, “You’re fine, Honey. There will always be rocks in the mud. You’re going to catch one no matter the pace.” “Well I don’t like rocks,” she snapped back with a playful grumble.

“It’s the nature of the Dark,” He whispered kissing her toes, soft on his lips. He glace up into her eyes, “Sometimes I think you just like to be coddled.” He hadn’t noticed her anticipation of his snarky remark and the handful of mud and grass that hit him in the shoulder.

“You know that’s not true!” She said laughing with false anger in her voice. She wiped her hand against her leg, as he shook his head at her. The boy thought loudly, “I don’t think we will have time to clean up before bed. It will be too dark in minutes.” She pulled her foot out of his hands. Quickly inspecting it, she then moved to her knees. He mimicked her old position, hands behind him unfolding out his legs in front of her with slightly bent knees.”And now I have no shirt to keep me warm,” he told her with a crooked frown.

She scooted through the grass on her knees then crawled over his legs and body, her hands on his shoulders guiding him back to the cold damp ground beneath him. Her nose was inches from his. Her lips glistened. Her eyes shined. He was filled with need. His skin warmed and his organ began to grow. Lightheaded, the boy thought to himself, “I can steal a kiss. I ache for a kiss.” She stumbled, ” I nee….I wan…I need you to just hold me tonight,” She whispered. “Belly to belly, I need you to hold me while we sleep.”

He fought the fire in himself to take her. Her hair dangled against his face teasing his nose. He slid his hand over her cheek and through her tangled hair. He put his hands on her hips resting her belly down against his. He slid his hands over her back as she embrace him laying her head on his bare chest. The boy’s fingers laced into her hair, his other hand flat on her back holding her against him as if he were protecting her from the air around them. “I’ll hold you forever,” He promised her as she wiggled against him. She let out soft whispers, “mine.” She dozed off; eyes closed listening to the beating of his heart. A soft, “I love you,” followed.

He stroked her locks, in heaven with her body on his. He slowly started to drift off to the sounds of her breath.

“I love you too,” he softly whispered as to not wake her, “…….tomorrow I kill all the rocks.”

Dreams of an Imaginary Friend: Wistful

I had a bit of fun creating today’s update so I thought I would quickly share the process.

First I drew a rough sketch of Boy and the beginnings of an outline for a Dark Wraith on the iPad.

df1

Next I printed it out on paper, successful at about the tenth time. Apparently my printer doesn’t take kindly to the frayed edges of note paper ripped out of a spiral notebook. Then I pretended to draw on said paper and took about 30 pictures with my phone, this being the most serviceable one.

df2

I then sent that picture back to the iPad and used it as a base layer to draw Girl and the rest of the Dark Wraith.

df3

Here comes the ink.

df4

After coloring we have the finished page. I am pretty please how it turned out. I think Girl could have used a bit more fine tuning. I was trying to make her look like she was puffing out her cheeks as if she were imitating the frog.

df5

Today’s page is actually a combination of three different pages I had ideas for but when I sat down last night to draw they all kind of just fell into place. This is also my updated first revision of a Dark Wraith and probably an accurate portrayal of the images from my dreams. I hope you enjoyed today’s comic. Please let me know what you think. Are you enjoying it so far?

Wrapping Uncounted

Monday the final page of A K Anderson’s Uncounted will go live. We have reached the last lines of the script I was given to work with. There are no more words. Originally I intended to post some concept sketches to generate interests for the final page but when I was loading the files I noticed that the first sketch was drawn back on April 18th. Wow, seven months ago. For a Writer/Artist, that is a long time to be playing in someone else’s sandbox. This was also my first time working from someone else’s script. I couldn’t change the rules or make it up as I went along. This also meant meeting someone else’s deadline. I grew to feel that in some way Uncounted was mine too but it’s time to hand the baby back over to the parent. I can’t play in the sandbox that I grew familiar with anymore. At some point, I may go into what I learned and took away from the whole experience. Tomorrow I will draw the final page of Uncounted and even though I will probably work all the way up until the final 6am posting deadline, I think I might just have to have to have a cigar and a glass of wine after I hit upload for this story for the last time.

Below are some of the first concept sketches. Click to Enlarge. I hope you enjoyed the story as much as I did drawing it.

Holiday How To

I thought it would be fun to share a bit of the process of the creation of today’s Thanksgiving themed comic. To view the pictures, you can click them to enlarge.

The Idea

I had yet to do a holiday themed comic this year. I had written a long Halloween story arc for Life…after Death but with exterior forces halting the completion of the “Order and Chaos” storyline, I decided to push that idea back until October of 2014. I assure you, I will complete the current LaD storyline. You know..life happens.

I really wanted to do at least a one off for this holiday and I was a dry well. Nothing was coming to me. I lacked a bit of creative juice, well a lot but I am starting to fill the well again. I was thinking about Thanksgiving and I was having a conversation between Corndog and Egg while in the shower this past Sunday. Some of the best ideas come from the shower and if you let them just ramble some odd things follow. Most of them were too wild and I believed this was one of them. I finally decided to write the kernel of the idea Monday afternoon. Yes, sometimes this is my script process (actually mostly).
h31

Tuesday rolled around and I completely dismissed the idea. There would be no Thanksgiving comic this year. I received a brief but nice email from a friend of mine that night and I felt a spark from my muse. And by Wednesday morning I was determined to have a comic up for my friends to enjoy. I broke out the iPad, opened up Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and thumb nailed and idea.
h32

When I know the dialogue might be a bit wordy, I go ahead and drop it into the Comic Book app and do a run of the script. This process takes a bit because the application is not very forgiving and crashes often. I actually had the whole storyline for the Battle of Plymouth Rock in my head but there was no way I would have enough room to fit the entire story in so I decided to steal bits of what Corndog says and just use those. I decided to cut all of Egg’s dialogue and dropped a few sentences out of Dave’s reaction. Yes, Dave. Initially, I didn’t want to include Roger because while the current story is progressing on the website I did not want to use him in any other story. Ultimately, I decided that he is easier to draw.

If you notice the word balloons in the first panel don’t match the characters and that is because after I decided to cut most of Egg’s dialogue, I needed Corndog to be in a position closer to Roger as to not obscure Egg while he was speaking so I shifted Egg to the left position.
h33

After that the process became easy. Just re-sketch a bit then do a layer of solid ink.
h34

This is the color layer. This is actually a combination of about eight layers but unfortunately with Autodesk on iPad at 1536 x 2048 you are only allowed to have six layers open at a time so once I completed the base color layer I would have to drop the next color layers immediately on top of it.
h35

The next layer is the Shading layer. The layer isn’t really necessary but I like how it looks on my style of art so I use it with everything.
h36

I drop all the layers together and go back and grab my standard Corndog and Egg back ground layer and combine them.
h37

At this point I go back to the Comic Book app and refit the word balloons and do a bit of revision. I also pray that the balloons are still active and have not deleted themselves when I exited the app previously, which happens often. At the last minute I added the “Grandma” bit and then saved that and sent it back to Autodesk and opened it at 768 x1024 to clean up the tails of the word balloons and do final touch ups on some of the colors.

I started this comic at about 5pm and finished at 10:30pm. Granted, I do take a lot of breaks so I wasn’t working the entire time. I hope you enjoyed the process and you can also see the final product below for comparison.

I hope everyone had a happy holiday or just a great day in general. Let me know if this behind the scenes look was enjoyable. I would love to hear your thoughts.

State of Affairs

I have been quiet for a bit. Was I pounding away at a keyboard writing a new story for NaNoWriMo? Nope. Well, I was but nope. Was I pulling all nighters drawing comic pages? Nope. I did have a birthday that was memorable though not in a very good way but I would like to thank everyone that wished me well on Facebook and Twitter.

Sadly, I am restructuring my creative energies or lack there of at the moment so I thought I would politely give a heads up to any loyal readers. First off, I am bowing out of NanoWriMo. I will though save my work so far, possibly post a snippet here at a later date, and if it speaks to me again I will revisit The Mekantic and the Robot as a short story or novella.

As for the comics, right now I just don’t have the energy to work on them. Life…after Death is in mid-story with the Order and Chaos storyline and I will wrap that up by posting sporadically with no warning. The storyline may be the last chapter for the Life..after Death line of comics. End of Times is wrapping up it’s last few pages of the current storyline. I figure I maybe have three more or so pages left on it and they will continue to be updated on Mondays until completion. After that, End of Times will be closing down.

I have been feeling this coming for a while and due to the light of recent events, which are personal in nature, it just felt like now is the right time to go ahead and let everyone know the status of the comics. I am impulsive but I don’t this was a rushed decision, with that said, I could just change my mind next week. I will still be around on social media and you have probably already noticed my declining use of that medium. Over the years I have developed many close friends and great friendships so I hope the change in my creative status does not effect those relationships. I think that’s about it.

Until next time,

Carlo

Progression of a Page: A. K. Anderson’s Uncounted

Those, that are familiar with my comics, know that I am currently illustrating Science Fiction and Fantasy author A. K. Anderson’s: Uncounted on my webcomic anthology site, End of Times.

One thing I enjoy doing on my Life…after Death fan page is to post what I call, “Progression of a Strip.”
The idea is to present a short step by step process of a drawing from start to finish. The reason I like to do this is because I enjoy seeing things develop and I enjoy seeing the same progression from other artists and from the writings of other authors. I find it intriguing to see the differences, from a sketch or a rough draft to the final product. I thought it might be fun to showcase the process of this past Monday’s page.

All of my pages are drawn on an iPad using the application, Autodesk Sketch Book Pro for iPad. This is the preliminary quick sketch. Part of my process is what I refer to as “pre-drawing” done in my head and then when I have the layout that I want, I make a quick sketch.

uc1

Then I stare at the sketch forever. The next step is the rough sketch adding a bit more form and detail to what I want to convey on the page. I usually finalize my panel boarders at this point to give myself boundaries.

uc2

This step is inking but, Gasp! I have color in some of the drawing. This was actually a mistake by me. Sketch Book limits the layers to six and I was combining layers to free a slot for a new one and I accidentally placed part of the base color layer on top of the inks which presented a huge headache when it came to the shading portion of the process.

uc3

At this point I lay down the base colors to get an idea of how I want to have the light sources and shading come into play.

uc4

Which brings us to the final product.

uc5

I hope you enjoyed seeing a little bit of my process. There must be an easier way though. Like transferring the image in my mind to paper digitally via a USB port implanted behind my ear.

What do you think?
